The Meadowbank
Club Badge:
In the early 90s, a competition was organised for the design of a Meadowbank
Club Badge. The winning entry was put forward by Matt Breen (now 4th Dan). A
good price was found from a supplier on the North Shore, and Meadowbank students
departed forever from the ranks of the anonymous un-badged. Matt supplied an
explanation of its buried meanings, long enough to make a decent read on a rainy
weekend.
- The badge contains
the six colours of Taekwon-Do: White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red and Black.
- The central
image represents the local landmark - the Kingsview tower.
- The five levels
of the tower represent the five tenets & five lines of the oath.
- The upward-reaching
tower symbolises the striving to achieve one's goals - demonstrating the tenet
of Perseverance.
- The yellow -
or gold: In heraldic practice the color gold was used to depict honor and
courage, two virtues prized by the Hwa-Rang; represented in Taekwon-do by
the tenet of Integrity.
- Green represents
nature - the tower against the green background represents Taekwon-Do's juxtaposition
of scientific techniques and the natural use of the body.
- Blue symbolises
serenity and tranquility - equating to the tenet of Self Control.
- The calligraphic
form of "ITF NZ" represents the cultural aspects of Taekwon-Do -
and the tenet of Courtesy ( an attribute of a civilised and artful society
) - whereas the bold block letters in turn represent the martial side of the
art.
- The Korean characters
read "Taekwon-Do", and are taken from an actual piece of General
Choi's own calligraphy.
- The square within
a diamond, the solution to an ancient puzzle, represents clarity of thought.
- The black borders
represent imperviousness to darkness and fear, and the tenet of Indomitable
Spirit
