You are sure to have many questions, so in an effort to answer some of those more frequently asked, we offer the following;

Q. What is Taekwon-do?

A. It is a form of self defence originating from Korea and has it's roots in an ancient martial art called Tae Kyon. The literal translation from Korean to English is `Foot and hand art'.

Q. What can you tell me about the club?

A. The Meadowbank club was formed some eighteen years ago and is one of twenty-one branches in the Auckland area under the auspice of the International Taekwon-do Foundation of New Zealand (recognised by the Hillary Commission) and in turn is affiliated to the International Taekwon-do Federation whose headquarters are in Canada. The club trains two nights a week at the Remuera Intermediate School hall in Ascot Ave, Remuera.

Q. What can you tell me about the Instructor?

A. His name is Peter Graham and he is 59 years Young! He lives at 3/81 Wellington Street, Howick. Phone 534 2719. He holds an ITFNZ Instructors certificate and the rank of 4th degree (dan) black belt.

Q. Can I get injured practising Taekwon-do?

A. Like any sport, accidents do happen, but in Taekwon-do every precaution is taken to minimise the risks. e.g. All sparing is non-contact, even in tournaments. The most common injury is pulled muscles which are usually the result of poor warm up procedures on the part of the student

Q. What will it cost me to train?

A. A joining fee (life registration) of $20.00 (incl) is required once you have made the decision to become a student. This entitles you to train at any ITFNZ branch or any ITF club in the world. A monthly training fee of $30.00 is payable on the first training night of each month. ($5.00 discount if paid before the 7th of the month) A family concession of $60.00 for three or more is also available. ($10.00 discount if paid before 7th of the month) The only other costs are the examination fees of $40.00 each time you decide to present yourself for grading. This opportunity comes up three times a year. A uniform (do-bok) will cost about $90.00. This comes complete with belt and badges.

Q. Who conducts the examinations?

A. An Examiner appointed by the ITFNZ Executive. This appointee must be of at least 4th dan.

We trust this answers some of your queries but should you have any others, please don't hesitate to contact Mr. Graham.

We look forward to seeing you.
